Design Is Everything

In today’s fast paced world, information is always bombarding us from all directions.  Good design plays a huge role in shaping our daily choices and decisions …

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, design subtly influences and guides our actions in ways that we may not even notice. From the logos on our favourite products to the layout of our favourite apps, even the signage that has been designed by someone to get you where you need to go, good design can lead us in our everyday decisions.

Hey Studio

You may not think much about it, but design is often the first point of contact between consumers and products or services. A well crafted business card, an eye catching website, or an aesthetically pleasing social media grid creates that all important positive first impression. These initial impressions can subconsciously influence our daily decisions, as studies show that people tend to trust and prefer aesthetically pleasing designs.

Colours can play a significant role in decision making. Using colour psychology, it is possible to convey specific messages instantly. Brands strategically use carefully selected colours to evoke desired emotions and influence consumer behavior, making us more likely to choose their products or services. We have a full blog titled ‘The Power of Colour in Design’ if this is something that you would like to dig a little deeper into, be sure to give it a read.

Consistent and well thought out design contributes to the establishment of a strong brand identity. Logos, typography, and overall visual consistency create a sense of trust and reliability. When faced with numerous choices, consumers are more likely to opt for brands that they recognise and trust. For instance, product packaging is a powerful tool that influences our purchasing decisions. Clever design can highlight key product features, convey a sense of quality, and stand out on a crowded supermarket shelf. Packaging design has the ability to sway our choices, prompting us to reach for one product over another.

In the age of social media, visuals are everything. Design on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok plays a crucial role in capturing attention and conveying messages quickly. Memorable and shareable graphics can influence and contribute to certain products or ideas going viral. If you are anything like me, I have been ‘influenced’ to buy certain products one too many times! (I’m looking at you TikTok…)

Subtle details in design can carry subconscious messages that impact our decisions without us consciously realising it. Certain symbols, carefully chosen fonts, and colours can convey messages that appeal to our emotions and beliefs, subtly nudging us in a particular direction.

In a world saturated with information, design acts as a silent influencer, shaping our choices and decisions in many ways. From the moment we encounter a brand to the daily use of our favourite things, the impact of thoughtful and strategic design is undeniable.

As the incredibly talented Paula Scher said, ‘design is everything’.
